How search engines Work

July 20, 2006

Understanding how search engines work is not so difficult when you consider all the elements that are involved. Basically, search engines use special software that automatically crawls the web looking for new information and web pages.

Google Search EngineThis software is generally referred to as a spider and it crawls the web looking for information that it analyzes and then ads to the search engines database. Then, when an individual goes to the search engine to search for certain terms all of the web pages in the database are searched for the terms and the matching ones are returned as results. However, spiders do not catch everything and there are certain ways to help the search engine return your web page as a higher result. These tricks of the trade include using specific keywords on your website as well as gaining as many links to your site on the web as possible.

Yahoo Search EngineAll search engines work a little differently, but most of the big ones rely heavily on keywords used in the search and web sites to return a matching result. Because of this, it is important for webmasters to identify the most popular sets of keywords and search terms that apply to their market and website in general. By doing this, the webmaster can then include the most relevant keywords in the content on his website in order to have the website returned as a result when those particular keywords are searched for. The more keywords, the higher the results, or at least that is the premise. There are other factors that play a role in how high a search engine ranks your website.

MSN SearchLinks make up the other weight search engines use to rank websites, at least as far as the larger search engines are concerned. The way this works is when the spiders crawl the web looking for new content to add to the database they also pick up on links to web pages. So, the more links there are pointing towards a website on the Web will result in a higher ranking for the site.

These are the basics of how search engines work and how web pages are ranked as results. However, all search engines have their own methodology for finding new content and rnaking websites and their exact methods are not known. So, using keywords and placing links to websites to increase search engine results will certainly work, these may not be the only criteria all search engines use to rank pages.
