Link Popularity refers to the number of sites that link to your web pages from various search engines such as Google, MSN, HotBot, etc. Many search engines use Link Popularity as a factor for determining page rank. The total number of web sites that link to your site is is called Link Popularity. Links can come from directories, articles, or web sites. The more links you have pointing to your site, the better.


Be aware that “popularity” is only one part of the link analysis systems that search engines such as Google use to rank web pages. The number and quality of links that you have pointing to your site are a factor that many search engines consider when determining the rank or your site and individual pages of your site.
Getting links from other sites is time intensive, adding your site to free web directories is a good place to start your Link Popularity.

Why is link popularity important?

Good link popularity can dramatically increase traffic to your web site and keyword rankings for your site. Well placed links are an excellent source of consistent and targeted traffic from search engines like google.
Each incoming link to your Web site from another Web site is seen by the search engines as an editorial endorsement from the other Web site, and will increase your popularity in a search engine’s ranking algorithm.

How to gain link popularity?

  • Write a description of your Web site that includes your keywords and location
  • Submit your site to as many free directories as you can find.
  • Search Google for keywords that describe your practice and/or location for Web sites that are well ranked. Where appropriate, submit your Web site to those Web sites.
  • Find partners which you can trade links with.
  • Submit the web site to the Open Directory Project – dmoz.org
  • Write articles with specific content and links and submit these to article sites like articledepot.co.uk.
  • Buy links from high traffic and high pr sites to your site.
  • Create a free blog (like blogger) start your own blog and link from there to your site.
  • Submit your website to paid web directories like dirspace.com and site-sift.com
  • Join a co-op network from digitalpoint and create targeted ads to your site.

Don’t use automated programs that send out form letters asking for links. But visit the site and send a short, personal message asking for a link or a link trade.
Keep in mind that not everyone want to exchange links. If you don’t get a response, you may want to try again in a couple of months. Don’t be impatient. Many site owners will file link requests and come back to review them when time allows.
Don’t set up a big page of links to just any site, and don’t exchange links with sites that do the same.
It is important not to get involved in a link-trading scheme used to increase the link popularity value of a group of Web sites. Search engines will sometimes remove all of the Web sites that are in a link-trading scheme.
